JULY 2013: JPRI Affiliate offers Policy Solutions for Sino-Japanese Territorial Dispute

JPRI affiliated scholar Tatsushi Arai has co-edited a book that offers policy solutions for the Sino-Japanese dispute over islands in the East China Sea. Dr. Arai—who serves as lead facilitator for the Bay Area Strait Talk Peace Symposium, which JPRI sponsors together with UC Berkeley—is a visiting fellow at George Mason University’s School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution and an associate professor of peacebuilding and conflict transformation at the School for International Training (SIT) Graduate Institute.

Earlier this year he and Zheng Wang convened scholars from China and Japan in Washington, DC, to discuss policy options for resolving the territorial dispute. (Dr. Wang is a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and an associate professor at Seton Hall University’s John C. Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations.) The proceedings from this meeting are now available in Tatsushi Arai, Shihoko Goto, and Zheng Wang, editors, Clash of National Identities: China, Japan, and the East China Sea Territorial Dispute (Washington, DC: Asia Program of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, 2013). JULY 2013: JPRI hosts NATO Parliamentary Assembly

On June 17, 2013, JPRI hosted the opening meeting of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly delegation visit to California. The meeting was held at the Valley Center for the Performing Arts at Holy Names University (HNU) of Oakland. Following welcoming remarks by HNU president Dr. William Hynes, JPRI advisory board member Dr. Patrick Lloyd Hatcher initiated a spirited policy discussion with invited panelists and the visiting delegates on how the United States and NATO can best respond to recent transformations in North Africa, the Middle East, and East Asia. The panel was chaired by Danish parliamentarian John Dyrby Paulson (Chairperson, NATO PA Subcommittee on Trans-Atlantic Relations), and also included Dr. Laurence Michalak (Emeritus Vice Chair, Center for Middle Eastern Studies, UC Berkeley), Bruce Rogers (U.S. Foreign Service, retired), and Dr. Donald Emmerson (JPRI advisory board members and director of the Southeast Asia Forum at Stanford University).
